The Little Things

Have you ever found how great an impact a small action can make? We feel like our lives have dramatically changed this weekend. As the nation has been seeing cities all over simultaneously break record highs in heat, we have been no exception here in Salt Lake City. The past 2+ weeks have been in the 100's. Maybe that's no big deal to the folks down in Texas, but we don't have AC everywhere here! Yesterday finally broke the camels back by hitting 104 degrees F outside and the 90's in our own house. No one wanted to move or do anything. Even Hiro was hiding out under the bed. I just about broke down and blew 5000$ on central air, but decided to first switch out the pads in our swamp cooler. At the beginning of the year, I had just replaced our old aspen wood kind to the oh-so-efficient futuristic composite blue foam pads from Walmart (same ones at Home Depot, just cheaper). Well guess what - I switched back. Suddenly, the air blowing into our house was SOOOO nice and cool! The temperature in our house has dropped down to 80 degree F, even though the temperature outside has risen to 106 today. For four new pads at $2.56 a pad, and 15 minutes of time on my roof, everyone has become so mucy happier and livelier. It was a well spent $10.

Just when we thought we were going to be lonely for a weekend, Mari Luangrath and Melissa Ovard came to save the day. Phew! Anyone interested in making a little money? Mari can hook you up. Especially if you're into stamping. She was in town to attend a convention for the type of homegrown company that Utah is so famous for: MLM. Melissa's back from New York! She now seems especially seasoned and politically correct - completely ill prepared to deal with the people in this state. We need to make a trip to NY.

Friday was a big day for an old mission buddy Ryan Dubois and his new wife, Felicia! It was great to see him finally make his move. He and I were probably the only single guys at our reunions for many years. Although we were never companions in Sydney, we ended up being classmates in CS classes at BYU together, singing on the Men's Chorus together and playing basketball together. It's amazing how life can push you together through circumstantial means sometimes.

On the off days, besides work, studying, taking Hiro on walks and playing with Taisei, we squeezed out some time to do some moutain biking with the boys and a car washing service project with the whole youth group. Fun times! And no, we didn't ride down a paved path! This was at the end of the trail. :)
