American Fork Canyon

More camping! This time we went to our regular ward campground - Granite Flats. I've never been to a group campground. It was... interesting. My idea of camping is getting away from it all. This camping was more like taking as many friends as possible up into the mountains. There must have been about 15 tents set up. Luckily, we secured a spot near the stream, so we couldn't hear the girls talking and giggling all night long. There was a huge thunderstorm that night so Hiro's first experience camping wasn't the greatest. Lots of cold rain and booming thunder. The "Tour of Utah" bike race was allegedly passing through our valley and the would be closing up the road from 9 am until 1 pm. As a result, everyone got up at 6 am, slammed down breakfast, packed up and cleared out by 9. We had decided that we already drove down there to go camping - might as well stay and enjoy it. But after seeing the place empty out so fast, and then realize that we were the only ones planned to stay, we decided to pack it up as well. Sheeez. Later that day, I looked up the race online and found out that they closed up one of the Cottonwood Canyons, NOT American Fork Canyon. Oh well. Here's one of the young women, Savina, taking care of Taisei as we prepare our tin foil dinners. If you look closely, you can see our tent in the background.

Yesterday we made one of our last mountain biking trips of the summer. We rode the Wasatch Crest Trail, including "Puke Hill" and some of the other crazy terrain. It was a beautiful ride. From the top, we could look into three different counties. We could see Salt Lake City and look right over the Canyons Ski Resort into Park City. From that point, we took the Desolation Lake route and rode back down into Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was a total of about 10 miles. Next time we'll complete the whole run and end up in Millcreek Canyon.
